Our Chicks Have Hatched! (At Least Two Of Them)

At last, the long awaited moment! At 7:30 in the morning, Josh runs outside. In a few moments he runs back in and shouts: A chick has hatched! We all rush out, and there it was. A bedraggled, half dead chick, but still it was cute. Sadly, since then, the first chick has died, but another one has hatched, as cute as cute can be. Here are some pics and movies for you to see!

Here's the first one, barely alive.

Here is Fatty, aka as Stoops or Broody, with her two
hatched chicks.
And here is the healthy one. So cute!

Chicks!

There are 18 eggs under one of our chickens. She has now been sitting on the for almost 2 weeks. We are all very excited to have chicks again!

                                                      How Chickens Hatch
                                                                                By Joshua Hickman
                                                                                       Illustrated by Joshua Hickman
In a chicken farm there was a hen. Just a minute ago she laid an egg
She does not get up. She sits on that egg every day.

She lays eggs day after day and turns them with her beak. If the chicken sits
on the eggs for twenty-one days a chick will pop out.

Inside the egg there is a tiny white spot.

Every day the tiny white spot inside the egg gets bigger and bigger.

In seven days the white spot will form into a chick.

In ten days inside the egg the chick already has a beak and feet.
He does not have a comb because he is not big.

As the chick gets bigger, it gets nourishment from the yolk.

The chick is getting so bug that he can hardly fit inside the shell.

It is hard work for the mother hen because she does not eat or drink.
She gets really thin. If she gets off the egg, the chick will die.

Sometimes she runs out and gets food, but she runs back before the eggs get cold.

Soon the chick can't fit in the egg, so it pecks at the shell
and tries to squeeze out. Then he rests. He tries again. It takes
eight hours to hatch.

When eight hours are over, the chick comes out. He is wet and cold.

All the new chicks go to the hen and they all go to sleep.

When they are ready they follow their mother and copy everything she
does.

THE END!

We can't wait!
Pictures will be posted!!!
